Going to the local dog groomers with your beautiful English Setter or any Setter, will usually end up with a Spaniel type trim which is incorrect, unless that is what you asked for!

They usually don’t have the knowledge of grooming our breed and you may find the feathers have been cut, the back has been clipped all the big ‘no no’s’ which will take months to grow out to be able to re style back into a Setter style.

If the body has been clipped the coat has probably been ruined, and when it does finally grow back it will not be as silky in texture as it should be it and may have a slight curl to it.

Clip or scissor?

Your breeder will probably advise that your English Setter is scissored, I use clippers to groom all English Setters then use the scissors to finish.

The 4 dogs below are all Show Champions and were all clipped then scissored the night before the show, a lot more work obviously went into the groom before that too, but the basic groom is clip & scissor, that is how I groom English Setter’s.

I like the cut on the neck to be as short as possible without showing skin, if you would prefer a slightly longer cut on the neck just let me know I can easily do this. My personal preference is a short cut to enhance a long clean elegant neck.

Grooming the English Setter puppy

Grooming starts between 6 – 8 weeks of age if I have a puppy, this is just cutting a bit of rag off the ears and getting used to their nails being cut. Then as often as possible ideally, every 2 – 4 weeks just to get the pup used to being groomed, but i can do this because I am a dog groomer.

A good age to start taking your new puppy to the groomers is from around 4 months of age as it just helps to get your pup used to all the new sounds which happen in the grooming room and used to being handled by a groomer.

Grooming the neutered dog or bitch.

I have owned a couple of spayed English Setter bitches now, Lucy Liu in the black & white photo was my introduction to the ‘spayed English Setter coat’ not through choice I will add, she had Endometriosis 4 days after her first litter and there was no choice but to spay her.

Lucy was my first English Setter and a show dog she had won a reserve cc, I applied for permission to show from the Kennel Club and it was granted. For those that don’t show dogs you can not show neutered dogs with out good reason. Lucy had a good reason.

For the first 6 months the coat wasn’t bad, Lucy had had her litter lost her coat which they do after a litter and the new coat came back through. The new coat was good, Lucy came back to the ring and won another reserve cc, then a CC this was about a year on. For about another year on I managed to control Lucy’s coat for the show ring, she looked amazing had loads of coat and never lost it because she was never going to have another season.

Lucy won another CC and a few more rcc’s, then the coat just kept growing and growing, and was getting thicker and thicker and harder to keep on top of for the show ring.

I did manage to make Lucy up into a Show Champion and that was her retired straight away from the show ring.

The Pet Cut

In time Lucy was given what I call the ‘pet cut’ she had to have her back clipped as her coat was so thick and heavy, especially when it was summer time and the weather was baking hot, there was no choice but to get the clipper’s on her back to thin it out for her. She used to look years younger when she had been clipped and acted it too, it was a relief to her to be rid of the coat. If Lucy’s coat hadn’t fully grown back for winter I would just put a dog coat on her to keep her warm.

I am sure we all have our views on clipping the backs and bodies of English Setters but when it comes to the neutered English Setter then over time that is where it becomes acceptable I think and is far kinder for the dog if they start growing what I can only describe as a bush of a coat which just keeps growing in all directions, and needs controlling.

Show dog presentation

A service for the English Setter owner who is a novice groomer,  new to the breed who just needs some help and advise getting started or the owner who is not confident at presenting their dog for a show. Included in this service will be some help on handling your dog for the ring as the two go hand in hand.

This is not a training session, is not available the day before general or breed championships shows. It is a one off appointment to get you started grooming your dog for the show ring.
